Internet

If you plan to stay in Berlin for good, you definitely should get an Internet contract. But how do you find out, which contract and which internet provider suits you best? Well there is a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, Germany may be a well developed country and as a customer you are (almost) always right. But when it comes to service and internet providers you will need to have a lot of patience. When signing up for any provider, you need to wait for a Telekom technician to come to your place. This appointment may take something between 2-4 weeks after you signed up for a contract.

Do you need a mobile surf stick for the time until you have your internet at home? If so, some of the companies offer a free mobile surfing option, which you may have to cancel after 3 months otherwise you will be charged.

If you want WiFi at home, be sure to sign up for a contract with WLAN ready router. Otherwise you will be sitting on your couch with a cable attached to your computer. Strangely enough some of the companies will offer you only LAN routers by default. So make sure to pay those few bucks extra and sign up for a WLAN router.

O2, formerly known as Alice
In my opinion the best and most flexible Internet provider of all. You can choose, if you would like to sign up for a fix contract for 24 months. This option will save you some money for the set up and the first 12 monthly payments. The other option (more flexible but also a bit more expensive) would be to sign up for a contract, that can be canceled to end of each month.

1&1 Internet
Another good choice is 1&1 Internet. If you plan to have Internet and Telephone then the 1&1 Doppelflat is the option to choose. As with most other providers as well the contracts have a minimum duration of 24 months. The different packages range from just internet to very fast internet with telephone flatrate (to German landlines). But also 1&1 offers some contracts which you can end to the end of each month.
