Some people love grocery shopping, and some people just hate it.

And then there are the people who go shopping for the basics and come back with a bunch of random things and nothing to make for dinner.

If you fall under the latter two categories, you might just benefit from shopping groceries online (though we’re not promising that you won’t buy a bunch of random things on impulse, or large quantities of the things on sale, only to realise that you don’t actually have a pantry when it all gets delivered).

There are two different types of grocery delivery services in Berlin.

Option 1, and by far our favorite way to buy groceries online, is using services such as Gorillas and Flink, that deliver groceries within 10-20 minutes.

How do they do it, you might ask yourself.

Well, Gorillas and Flink do have several small warehouses spread throughout the city, usually one or two in each neighbourhood.

This way the riders can quickly pick up your order with their electric bikes and deliver within this short amount of time.

Option 2 is ordering your groceries online with e.g. Rewe, which will deliver from one centrally located warehouse.

That means that you usually pick a time slot for your delivery for the next day or day after.

The advantage of these services is that they usually have more items to choose from.

Groceries Delivery Services in Berlin

Shopping groceries online is becoming more popular, perhaps because there are many companies that offer it now, and it’s much easier and more convenient than having to do it after work or on your day off.

Weekends should be spent relaxing and enjoying yourself, not bumping into other people’s trolleys at the supermarket, spending ages queueing at the till, and trying to get your screaming kids to let go of the supersize bag of gummi bears.

And since Corona has come along and all unnecessary contact should be avoided, shopping your groceries online is not only the most convenient but also the safest option.

Gorillas

One of the most amazing things to happen lately is the arrival of Gorillas in Berlin.

If you haven’t heard of Gorillas yet you will be in for a surprise.

You heard that right. They really are that fast.

Very similar to Gorillas is the new grocery delivery service Flink.

Groceries are usually delivered within 10-20 minutes.

REWE Delivery Service*

You can buy your groceries online at Rewe, where you select the all the food and drinks you would like to buy, pick a payment method and delivery time, and they show up at your door with your groceries – it’s that simple.

REWE offers almost the same range of products online that they offer in their physical store locations.

And best of all, if some items from your delivery are not available, you will be offered the option to choose a replacement straight away.

This way you won’t be disappointment that the delivery is missing half of the ordered items. Isn’t that great?

We have compared the online prices with the prices in the supermarkets (Rewe only).

While most products do cost the same, you might find some items on sale in the supermarket that you do not see discounted online.

Amazon Fresh*

Another great option for ordering your groceries online is Amazon Fresh!

What we like the most about Amazon Fresh is the fact that they have so many delivery slots available that you usually can pick your prefered time.

Any delivery will be brought right to your doorstep, so even when you order water or milk you don’t have to carry it up all the way yourself.

There are also dedicated groceries delivery companies that operate online only, and one such grocery delivery company is Bringmeister – an especially good choice if you buy bottled water.

Everyone says tap water is fine in Berlin, but if your tastebuds are functioning properly, and you’ve seen the limescale sticking to your kitchen appliances and sink, you might just disagree with everyone.

If you need bottled water, Bringmeister is a pretty good source for it.

And just for the record, Bringmeister is operated by Kaisers & Tengelmann, which means they are the main competitor for REWE delivery service.

Difference between Delivery Services

These groceries delivery services all operate in pretty much the same way, it just depends which supermarket you want to shop at, and what your budget is.

Most services offer different payment types like PayPal, invoice, or cash upon delivery.

So when it comes to payment methods and the choice of groceries the difference is not that big.

If anything we would say that Rewe and Bringmeister do have the most variety of products followed by Amazon Fresh.

But when it comes to delivery times the differences between these grocery delivery services could not be bigger.

Gorillas and Flink are for the ones that need their groceries very quickly (within 10 minutes), while Rewe, Amazon Fresh and Bringmeister are more suitable if you can wait a couple of days until delivery.

Advantages and Disadvantages of buying Groceries Online

One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes the things you ordered are not available, so they might be replaced with other things.

It might occur that you ordered coconut müsli, and because they were out of it, they replaced it with extra crunchy chocolate cereal with chocolate chips and cookie bits.

If you’re not into the occasional totally random replacement, or if you’re the type of person who picks at every piece of fruit and vegetable to make sure there are no bruises or scratches on it, you might have a hard time adjusting to getting your groceries picked up by someone else.

However, the advantages of online grocery shopping are so great, you might just get so used to it you’ll never want to set foot in a supermarket again.
